How to Choose the Best Yak Chew for Your Dog: A Complete Buying Guide

With so many yak chews on the market - different sizes, shapes, flavors, and hardness levels - picking the right one for your dog can feel surprisingly complicated. Choose too small, and it becomes a choking hazard. Choose too hard for a senior dog, and you risk a dental fracture.

We've been making authentic Himalayan yak chews since 2013, and we'll walk you through exactly how to choose the best yak chew for your dog using a simple four-step framework: size, chewing style, age, and variety. By the end, you'll know precisely which chew belongs in your cart.

What makes a yak chew worth buying?

Before diving into how to choose, it helps to know what separates a quality yak chew from a mediocre one. Authentic yak chews are made from just 3 ingredients: yak milk, a small amount of cow milk, and lime juice. Some even add a small amount of salt for taste. No preservatives, no fillers, and no artificial hardeners should be present in yak chew.

What you're buying is essentially hard cheese - fully digestible, high in protein, low in fat, and naturally long-lasting. A well-made chew softens gradually as your dog works on it, which means it's tough enough to last but won't fracture teeth the way antlers or raw bones can.

Yak chews are also nutritionally dense, making them more than just a boredom buster.

Compared with many traditional dog chews, yak chews are naturally high in protein, very low in fat, and contain no soy, wheat, corn, or artificial preservatives.

The four things that determine whether a yak chew is right for your specific dog are size, chewing style, age, and variety. Work through each one.

Step 1 - Start with your dog's size

Size is the most important safety factor. A chew that's too small is a choking hazard because an ambitious dog can get the whole piece in their mouth. A chew that's too large is unwieldy and frustrating, especially for small dogs. The right size keeps your dog engaged safely for multiple chewing sessions.

Use your dog's weight as the starting point, then adjust based on chewing style (covered in Step 2).

When in doubt, always size up rather than down. A chew that's slightly larger than needed is always safer than one that's slightly too small. For more detail on how to apply the muzzle-length rule and thickness test to confirm the right size, see our complete guide on what size yak chew to get for your dog.

A note on flat-faced breeds

Pugs, French Bulldogs, Bulldogs, and Boxers have shorter muzzles and different jaw mechanics. For these breeds, use thickness as your primary guide rather than length - the chew needs to be wide enough that they can't fully close their jaw around it. A 25 lb Frenchie may need a Large rather than a Medium. Our guide on yak chews for small dogs covers flat-faced breed sizing in detail.

Step 2 - Factor in your dog's chewing style

Weight gives you a starting point, but chewing style often moves you one size up - especially for power chewers. Two dogs of the same weight can go through a chew at completely different speeds depending on how aggressively they chew.

Aggressive chewers

If your dog destroys most chews quickly or chews with intense, sustained focus, go one size up from the weight chart. A 40 lb aggressive chewer should get an XL rather than a Large. For breed-specific guidance, see long lasting yak chews for large dogs.

Moderate chewers

Most dogs fall here - engaged and persistent but not frantic. Stick with the weight chart. A large chew for a 40 lb moderate chewer will comfortably last multiple sessions.

Gentle or senior chewers

Yak chews soften gradually as dogs work on them, making them gentler on teeth than antlers or raw bones. For seniors, stay with the weight chart - sizing up makes the chew unwieldy. If your dog has significant dental issues, check with your vet before introducing any hard chew.

Step 3 - Consider your dog's age and life stage

Puppies (6+ months)

Wait until adult teeth are coming in, typically around 6 months. Choose a size too large to swallow, limit sessions to 15 minutes, and supervise throughout. Full guidance in our article on: can puppies have yak chews.

Adult and senior dogs

Adults with healthy teeth are the ideal candidates - use the chart, and you're set. For seniors, the same applies, but be more cautious if there's existing dental wear or disease. Limit sessions to 30–45 minutes at a time to extend the life of each chew.

Step 4 - Plain or flavored? Choosing the right variety

Choose plain if...

  •  Your dog is already a motivated chewer
  •  They have known food sensitivities or a restricted diet
  •  You want the shortest possible ingredient list

Choose flavored if...

  •  Your dog is picky or has lost interest in plain chews
  •  You want to add variety to their enrichment routine
  •  You're introducing chews to a reluctant dog

Our guide onflavored yak chews for dogs covers what to look for on the label and which flavors tend to perform best with picky eaters. You can also browse our flavored yak chews collection to see current variety options.

Calorie content by chew size

Yak chews are a treat, so they should still fit within your dog's overall calorie intake. As a general rule, treats should stay under 10% of your dog's daily calories.

Frequently asked questions

Can I give my dog a yak chew every day?

Most dogs do well with sessions of 30–45 minutes several times a week rather than all-day access. Keep all treats under 10% of daily caloric intake.

What do I do when the chew gets small?

Take it away before your dog can swallow it whole. Soak the stub for 5 minutes, then microwave for 45–60 seconds - it puffs into a crunchy cheese snack. Full instructions in our guide onhow to make yak cheese puffs.

Are yak chews safe for dogs with dairy sensitivities?

The curing process removes most lactose, so many lactose-sensitive dogs tolerate yak chews well. For a confirmed dairy allergy, check with your vet. Full breakdown of can dogs digest yak chews.

How long should a yak chew last?

A properly sized chew for a moderate chewer typically lasts multiple sessions across several days. See how long yak chews last for specific data and tips to extend each chew.
